Founded in 1930 as Compañía Dominicana de Teléfonos (CODETEL), established as a subsidiary of the Anglo Canadian Telephone Company (later GTE). CODETEL held a de facto monopoly on telecommunications in the Dominican Republic until the mid-1990s. In 2000, it became part of Verizon Dominicana after the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE (Source), (Source).
