EDATEL traces its origins back to 1933 when a communications system was established along the railway line in Antioquia. In 1996 EDATEL S.A. was formally constituted. Over 2011–2015 it was progressively acquired by UNE EPM (first partially in 2011, then fully by 2015). As of 2025, official registries list EDATEL S.A. as "in liquidation". After its acquisition, EDATEL became part of UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones and the larger group controlled by Millicom International Cellular S.A.
