Eir originates from a former state-owned monopoly (originally "Telecom Éireann"), was privatised after 1999, and over decades has remained the largest telecom operator in Ireland. In 2015 Eircom formally rebranded to "Eir", launching a 1 Gb/s (FTTH) broadband product and reworking its legacy product names under "eir Fibre", "eir Mobile", etc (Source), (Source).
