The group originated in the former state monopoly of French telephony, with its roots in the postal/telecommunications ministry; reorganised as an autonomous entity in 1990 and became a public limited company in 1997. In 2000 France Telecom acquired the UK mobile operator (then) Orange plc and thereafter adopted Orange as its primary brand. On 1 July 2013 the company formally changed its legal name from France Telecom to Orange S.A (Source), (Source), (Source).
